| Aloe Butter | Derived from the Aloe Vera plant, this butter retains the healing properties of the plant. With a pH balance nearly identical to that of our skin, Aloe Butter helps to keep skin smooth and supple, while also helping to control acne, and heal burns, cuts and scratches. It may also help relieve the symptoms of insect bites and allergies and psoriasis. |
| Apricot Kernel Oil & Wax | Apricot Kernel Oil is known for its high Vitamin E content and skin softening properties. It helps skin retain elasticity, clarity, and suppleness, while absorbing rapidly and preventing precious water from evaporating from the skin. Apricot Wax retains the properties of the oil, but allows GMBB to make truly vegan products that stay solid at room temperature! |
| Babassu Oil | Babassu oil is effective for combination skin types because it offers moisturizing and softening qualities, without feeling greasy. It is most known for its 70% lipid content, lipids being the fats that act as a barrier for skin, locking in moisture and keeping impurities out. |
| Beeswax | Beeswax adds hardness and stability to cosmetics. Produced by bees, it turns a light yellow color after being “contaminated” by honey and pollen, which nourish skin and discourage bacteria. |
| Papa Dube's Beeswax (Raw) | This wax is a byproduct of the honey-collecting process. Collected, washed, and minimally refined on a small farm in Vermont, this wax contains enough honey and pollen that it still smells like honey and flowers. |
| Castor Oil | Castor oil is a noted emollient that easily penetrates and softens skin. It is also known for its anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, and soothing properties. It is often used to treat eczema, psoriasis, chapped skin, and burns. |
| Cocoa Butter | The Cocoa Butter GMBB uses is minimally refined, so it retains a strong cocoa scent. Cocoa butter is very hard but melts immediately on contact with skin. Super-moisturizing, it isn’t recommended for oily skin. It is noted for its ability to minimize stretch marks during pregnancy and adolescence, as well as softening wrinkles and smoothing and protecting chapped skin. It also smells and tastes delicious! |
| Coconut Oil | Coconut oil is known for its ability to soften skin and add a longer shelf life and rich lather to soaps. |
| Hazelnut Oil | This oil has long been used for treatment of dry and damaged skin and as a base for massage oils. It is absorbed easily by the skin and helps restore elasticity and circulation to the skin. It is also commonly used in sun care products as it has been found to filter the sun’s rays. |
| Jojoba Oil & Wax | Jojoba oil is probably best known because it mirrors our skin’s own sebum which helps protect our skin and hair. It contains protein and minerals as well as a substance similar to collagen. It can reduce wrinkles and stretch marks, lighten or heal scars, return the skin to its natural pH balance, and won’t clog pores. It is very popular as a massage oil. Jojoba wax retains the properties of the oil, but allows GMBB to make truly vegan products that stay solid at room temperature! |
| Mango Butter | Mango butter is a wonderful emollient with healing and regenerative properties. It is a good source of essential fatty acids and may even help protect against the sun’s UV rays. |
| Olive Oil | Olive oil is a major ingredient in GMBB soaps because it produces a much milder soap than coconut or palm oils. It moisturizes and smoothes the skin while contributing a pleasant aroma and color. |
| Palm Oil | GMBB likes to use Palm Oil for soap-making because it produces a very hard bar of soap that lasts long and doesn’t strip the skin of natural oils. |
| Passion Fruit Oil | Passion Fruit Oil is high in Vitamins A and C and potassium. Because it is known to relieve muscle tension and relax the body, it makes a great addition to massage and suncare products. It tastes yummy, too! |
| Peach Kernel Oil | This oil is ideal for sensitive or dry skin as it is light, easily absorbed, and contains loads of Vitamin E and fatty oils. It is also said to help relieve itching. |
| Shea Butter | Shea butter has a high amount of Vitamin A and Vitamin E, as well as phytosterols, triterpenes, fatty esters and phenolic acids. Vitamins A and E are important in helping to repair skin damage; phytosterols, and triterpenes aid in skin allergies; phenolic acids are good for cellular protection. Shea Butter is widely used to protect skin from the sun’s UV rays, as well as soften and heal cracked and aged skin. It is gentle enough to use on even the most sensitive skin, yet highly effective. |
| Sweet Almond Oil | This oil contains Vitamins A, B1, B2, B6 and E and is considered to be non-irritating. It is an excellent emollient and is soothing enough to relieve itching caused by various skin conditions, inflammation, and sunburn. |
| Sodium Hydroxide (Lye) | Lye is the ingredient that transforms oils into soap. Extremely caustic, it is dangerous in raw form, but once fully incorporated into the oils, it produces a hard, mild, and effective soap. |
| Wheat Germ Oil/Butter | Wheat Germ Oil and Butter are loaded with Vitamin E, a noted antioxidant, and smaller amounts of Vitamins A, B (B1, B2, B3, and B6), F, and lecithin. They feel very light on the skin and penetrate quickly, making them idea for dry, irritated, or aging skin. Wheat Germ Oil/Butter is also said to help regenerate cells and reduce scarring. |
| Information on oils, butters, and waxes is from Oils By Nature, Inc. | |
| Dyes | GMBB uses only natural pigments and dyes (such as clay or chlorophyll) in soap products. If an artificial dye product has been used, you will see it noted in the product ingredient list in red. |
| Essential Oils | Essential oils are derived from plants and encompass a vast array of beneficial properties. Some, such as lavender or citrus, can irritate sensitive skin, but most provide pleasant scents and mentally and emotionally stimulating or calming qualities. |
| Additives & Exfoliants | GMBB uses various natural ingredients as exfoliants in soaps. These include ground oatmeal, which soothes and softens the skin, crushed dried herbs, which lend color, scent, and exfoliation to a soap, and fresh or wet herbs, which give the soap a unique color and texture while also lending the herbs’ beneficial qualities to the product. |
| Flavor Oils | Flavor oils are artificial flavors added to cosmetics. The oils GMBB uses are sugar-free, meaning that they operate largely by providing a scent, and not a flavor. Flavors that include sugar cause the user to lick his/her lips and contribute to the drying and chapping that s/he is trying to cure! Only balms that contain honey will contain sugar. |
